The Rise of Electric Vehicles: A brief history of EVs

Electric vehicles sound very Gen Z but date back to the 18th century. With breakthrough innovations and development in the EV sector today, it is no doubt that they are considered to be the modern invention. However, the first ever electric vehicle was not developed in recent times but in 1832 by Robert Anderson. It was the first crude electric carriage.

The Lohner-Porsche Mixte becomes the first electric hybrid vehicle! By the beginning of the new century the adoption of electric vehicles had gained quite a momentum. In 1901, the first Electric Hybrid that ran on both battery and diesel was created by Ferdinand Porsche, namely the Lohner-Porsche Mixte. And, by the year 1912 electric vehicles accounted for ⅓ of US’s on road vehicles.

The unfortunate decline...

Eventually, people lost their interest in EVs around the year 1920s due to the cheap and abundant availability of oil across the world. Gasoline powered vehicles were cheap but required a lot of manual effort.

Love Bird, a cute two seater electric car, developed in India! The automobile industry started showing their interest back in EVs after the new regulations in 1990-92. And, India wasn’t very behind in the race too. The first Indian EV “Love Bird” was designed and created by the Eddy Electric series. It was a two seater electric car with four automatic transmission with a reverse gearbox, which was first unveiled in Auto Expo in Delhi in the year 1993.

Toyota Prius a hybrid electric car, mass produced by Japan!

The first breakthrough came in the year 1996 when the first mass produced electric hybrid vehicle was developed in Japan, the Toyota Prius. Around the year 1999, automotive manufacturers started increasing their spend on research and infrastructure building better electric vehicles.

The game changer, Tesla, enters the EV market!

In the year 2006, Tesla launched, and claimed to manufacture luxury EVs that can run at a speed of more than 200 mph. Tesla, not only was the wave of change for the EV industry but changed the landscape of the whole automobile industry, forever!

LEAF became the world’s first mass-market all-electric vehicle! In the year 2010 GM released the Chevy Volt that became the first commercial plug in hybrid model. It used a battery made by the energy department of the US. And, in December, Nissan also released the LEAF, an all-electric car. In January 2013, it started assembling it’s LEAF model, which had zero tailpipe emission.

The battery of electric cars is the most expensive part of it. To overcome this, the investments made by the energy department finally paid off as after heavy research, trials and innovations, the price of the batteries reduced by 50% making it affordable for the people to buy electric vehicles.

Nations pledge to adopt emission free mode of transportation!

With constant developments and emerging technologies in the EV sector, EVs have proven to be cost effective, safe for us and for our environment. That’s why all over the world, countries have set targets to adopt the emission free mode of transportation and India is not any far behind in this endeavor. By 2030, India aims to become a 100% electric vehicle nation, with emission-free transportation.

BluSmart not only supports this initiative but also pledges to expand its electric charging infrastructure so that the biggest current roadblock is slowly eradicated. Along with building a charging infrastructure, our aim is to bring a revolution in the way people commute in urban India. We want to transform the urban cities by providing 100% electric, sustainable, affordable and reliable mobility solutions.
